Abstract
Command of English has become one of the non-negotiable academic and professional qualifications for Accounting students in the era of globalization. Even so, the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) materials that are commercially available are frequently oriented toward Western contexts and are only weakly rooted in the socio-cultural realities in which students actually live. This study sets out to analyze the learning needs of Accounting students with respect to English instruction that is integrated with local wisdom and local cultural wealth. A mixed-methods approach with a sequential exploratory design was applied. Quantitative data were collected through a structured questionnaire, while qualitative data were obtained through in-depth interviews with key student informants. The results show that the students' main orientations in learning English are preparation for the world of work (15%) and the improvement of active communication (20%). Speaking was identified as the most crucial competency to master (20%), followed by vocabulary mastery (17%). Furthermore, the majority of students showed a strongly positive reception toward the integration of local wisdom, with 67% strongly agreeing on the importance of integrating local cultural wealth and 97% affirming the urgency of contextual, locally grounded learning modules. This integration was shown to increase motivation, active engagement, and meaningful comprehension of accounting texts. The recommendation arising from this study points to the need to reorient the development of ESP teaching materials so that they combine technical accounting language competence with local cultural dimensions.
