Abstract
Diabetes is a growing health problem, including in South Kalimantan. Metformin, used as first-line therapy, often causes gastrointestinal sida effects, creating a need for natural alternatives. Oil palm fruit (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids with potential antidiabetic activity. To identify the antidiabetic effectiveness of ethanol extract from oil palm fruit in male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) with alloxan-induced diabetes and to determine the optimal dose for lowering blood glucose levels. Experimental study using a pretest-posttest control group design. The extract was obtained through maceration using 95% ethanol p.a., followed by phytochemical screening. Diabetes was induced with 150 mg/kg body weight of alloxan monohydrate intraperitoneally. Test animals (n=3/group) were divided into six groups (negative control, metformin, mastin, and three extract doses: 10, 25, and 50 mg/kg body weight); blood glucose levels were measured on days 14 and analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The extract yield obtained was 1.42%. Phytochemical screening showed positive results for flavonoids, tannins, saponins, alkaloids, and steroids. ANOVA revealed significant differences among groups at all observation points (p < 0.001). On day 14, the 50 mg/kg dose produced a lower blood glucose level than both the metformin and mastin groups. oil palm fruit extract is effective as an antidiabetic agent in alloxan-induced diabetic rats, with 50 mg/kg body weight being the most optimal dose through day 14.
