Abstract

English is a crucial subject in Indonesia, taught since elementary school. Mastering English involves four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Vocabulary is an essential component in English, as it helps deliver ideas and access information. However, many Indonesian students struggle with English due to their lack of vocabulary mastery.The main cause of academic failure is a lack of understanding of vocabulary. Research shows that students often struggle with understanding the context of English sentences in pronunciation, spelling, and grammar. Vocabulary development is crucial for language learning, as it connects the amount of vocabulary needed to be mastered with academic material. In the S1 law study program at Universitas Sari Mulia, English is a crucial subject for students to support their academic performance, especially in foreign languages. Objective: To find out students' difficulties in learning English vocabulary. Methods: Quantitative descriptive method research design. The population is the first semester of law study program at Universitas Sari Mulia, with a total sample of fourteen students. Results: Base on the data presentation and analysis in the previous chapter, it can be concluded that the students’ difficulties vocabulary mastery in pronunciation was (28.24%), meaning was (28.24%), grammar was (24.71%), and spelling was (18.82%). So, the dominant difficulty in vocabulary mastery at the first-semester law students was pronunciation and meaning. Conclusion: Researchers found that some Universitas Sari Mulia law students still struggle with English vocabulary, indicating a lack of knowledge and a need for improvement in their vocabulary mastery.
