Abstract

Students’ motivation plays an important role in the success of learning English. However, many students experience low motivation due to monotonous teaching methods. The use of interactive learning media such as Kahoot! is expected to make the learning process more engaging and increase students’ motivation. Objective: This study aimed to find out the effect of using Kahoot! on eighth grade students’ motivation in learning English at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Banjarmasin. Methods: This study used a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one group pre-questionnaire post-questionnaire design. The sample consisted of 27 eighth grade students. The instrument used in this research was a questionnaire consisting of 20 items. Results: The results showed the mean score of the pre-questionnaire was 71.70, while the post-questionnaire increased to 76.59. The paired sample t-test result showed that the significance value (Sig. 2-tailed) was 0.019, which is lower than 0.05. This indicates that there was a significant difference between students’ motivation before and after the use of Kahoot!. Conclusion: Based on the findings, the use of Kahoot! has a significant positive effect on students’ motivation in learning English. Therefore, Kahoot! can be considered an effective interactive learning medium to enhance students’ motivation in English classes.
