Abstract

English learning in tenth-grade students at MAN 3 Banjarmasin has faced challenges in encouraging active student participation, as many students remain passive during lessons. While digital tools like Kahoot have been introduced, they have not always succeeded in creating a fully student-centered learning environment. This study examined whether using Wordwall as a learning media could encorauge active student participation in English classes. Objective: To determine whether the use of Wordwall as an English learning media can encourage active participation of tenth-grade students at MAN 3 Banjarmasin. Methods: This qualitative Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted in one cycle consisting of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The participants were 29 students of class X-F. Data were collected using observation sheets, questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. Results: Observation sheet findings showed consistently high engagement across all three dimensions. In the cognitive dimension, students demonstrated critical thinking with average scores of 4–5 out of 5. In the emotional dimension, they displayed visible enthusiasm and enjoyment, consistently scoring 5 out of 5. In the behavioral dimension, students actively volunteered, collaborated, and completed all fifteen Wordwall tasks with scores mostly between 4 and 5. Questionnaire results supported these observations, with most students reporting improved focus and understanding (cognitive), greater enjoyment and reduced boredom (emotional), and higher levels of active participation and collaboration (behavioral). Conclusion: The study concludes that Wordwall successfully created a dynamic, interactive classroom atmosphere, turning a regular recount text lesson into an engaging, student-centered experience and encouraging meaningful participation even in one cycle.
