Abstract

This study aims to identify students' speaking difficulties in the English for Special Purposes (ESP) class at Dit Samapta Polda South Kalimantan. English is an important international language for education and global communication, including in the context of policing in tourist areas. Objective: The purpose of this study is to identify the speaking difficulties faced by students in the English for Special Purposes (ESP) class at Dit Samapta Polda South Kalimantan. Methods: This study used a quantitative descriptive method, with the population consisting of 34 students enrolled in the English for Special Purposes (ESP) class at Dit Samapta Polda South Kalimantan in 2023. The research instrument used was a questionnaire with a Likert scale, which was validated through content and construction validity with the help of expert validators, and tested for reliability using Cronbach's Alpha. The collected data were analyzed using quantitative descriptive analysis with the help of SPSS to identify speaking difficulties faced by students in ESP classes. Results: Based on the research findings, students in ESP classes experience difficulties in English conversation mainly due to lack of vocabulary, confusion in the use of tenses, and rudimentary pronunciation and intonation. In addition, limited opportunities to speak in class and a less supportive environment outside the classroom are also inhibiting factors. The current curriculum is considered not helpful enough in improving students' speaking skills. Overall, vocabulary problems are the biggest factor affecting students' difficulties, while pronunciation and intonation show a lesser influence.
