Abstract

There are four skills that must be mastered in order to be proficient in a language, which are listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Speaking is said to be the most important skill, not the other because being able to speak a foreign language means being competent. Speaking is one of the skills that learners learn. It is the most difficult skill to master for students of all levels. Moreover, Indonesian students still find it difficult to practice their English skills in daily conversation even though they have studied English for ten years in formal education. Objective: To find out the difficulties in speaking English and the strategies used by students in English conversation at Sari Mulia University. Methods: Mixed method research design and sampling technique using simple random sampling. Data collection instruments used interviews and Google form questionnaires. Results: According to the results showed that the highest problem of speaking problems was 34 students lacking vocabulary (85%) and the lowest problem was 11 students lacking motivation (27.5%). The highest strategy is 33 students use approximation strategy (82.5%) and the lowest strategy is 9 students avoid communication (22.5%). Conclusion: Based on the results of the research that has been done, it shows that students experience difficulties in learning Speaking English. The need for strategies to overcome these problems so that students do not have difficulty speaking English.
